Description

Your duo of bro hugs and fist bumps are back in the sequel to the brilliant co-op game from EA Montreal. ‘Transworld Operations’ private military contractors Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem are now in charge of a seemingly simple covert mission. This game starts with a bang. Literally, you see the beauty of Shanghai before a skyscraper is engulfed in flames.

There are plenty of blockbuster-esque action happening around you. The game adds teamwork to a fast-paced energy that Army of Two is known for. The Aggrometer gives you and your friend to flank enemies when they’re distracted. If Rios runs out a blazin’, then Salem can sneak around the other self while Rios keeps the attention (and bullets) at him. The GPS system not only lets you know where you should be heading next, but also to target enemies, find out their rank, and let your teammate know who you’re aiming at. What’s better is the picture-in-picture of your teammate’s vision, allowing a plan to be done with precision.

Upgrade your weapons, modifying them to the point of choosing the barrel, attachments and the colour of paint. The face masks can also be modified to your liking. Morality tests throughout the game allow you to decide the fate of people in the way, like a security guard just doing his underpaid job. With one press of the button, either you or your friend will make the important decision.

Comments about ARMY OF TWO: THE 40TH DAY (Xbox 360):

"Army of Two: The 40th Day" is a two-player shooter that can be played split screen - "couch" multiplayer - that includes a couple of surprising twists on the standard 3rd-person shooter.

One of the twists is the amount of teamwork required in the game. You actually need to work with your partner to complete every level. Whether it's a leg-up over a barricade or helping hold open a door, the fact that it's the two of you is built into the game.

Playing the game with a mate in split screen mode is a surprising amount of fun. High-fives and chest-bumps feature in the game; another unexpectedly fun feature is the ability to customise your outfit and weapon to the nth degree. Gold-plated shotgun? Check. Diamond grenade? Also check.

Alternatively you can make sure your partner does not "feel the love" by stomping on his toe or yelling at him. Outside of interactions with your partner, there are a couple of moral decision points in the game that are interesting but don't affect the outcome as far as I can tell. You can sacrifice the hostages or help certain characters, or you can just do your own thing.

Gameplay-wise, Army of Two has the standard controls: crouch, zoom, melee, run, throw grenade. On top of that, one player can fake a surrender or even fake death or take other measures to ensure the enemy direct their fire at your partner, allowing you to get better position. Having to deliver a healing adrenelin shot reinforces the co-operative nature of the game too.

OK, the game can be a little repetitive when you face a difficult end-level boss, only to face 2 more further down the track. And some sections require precision timing or aiming or tactics (like only shooting a boss in the back) which goes against the normal gameplay of throwing a lot of lead at anything that moves. But overall, the game's difficulty stays at the challenging level without becoming punishing.

This is first and foremost a fun game, delivered in a blockbuster style, that is most enjoyable played with a friend in person.
