Comments about EMI The Beatles - Let It Be (2009 Digital Remaster):
The Beatles were falling apart when they came together to record this album in early 1969. The public and private pressures of their massive fame had become too much to bear and, as the documentary film of these sessions so sadly testifies, they were weary of life in the Fab Four cocoon and ready to go their separate ways. Tense and fractious though the sessions may have been at times, the results are still pretty remarkable and prove that, even when in cruise control mode, they could still produce the goods. Standout tracks include opener 'Two of Us' (Paul's honeymoon ode to Linda) and John's timeless 'Across the Universe', along with rollicking cranked-up versions of 'I've Got A Feeling', 'Get Back', 'One After 909' (rescued from the pre-fame Cavern Club day vaults) and George's 'For You Blue'. The title track had already been a huge hit by the time the album eventually saw the light of day in May 1970.
As with all the Beatles remasters, the sound is crisp and clean yet much meatier, with plenty of added 'clunk' along the bottom to emphasise that unique latter-day Beatle bass and drum sound. Sonically, this is a vast improvement over the original 1987 CD release which doesn't fall into the usual remastering trap of over-compression and merely being louder for the sake of it. Listen to this along with the stripped-down 2003 'Let It Be...Naked' release for a fascinating journey through the twilight days of Liverpool's finest and it is obvious why, even forty years after they broke up, the Beatles are still considered the greatest!
